The Silence Breaks

We missed three weeks this time, so I am going to try and remember the things that happened throughout pretty much all of October.

One thing that we have been doing is struggling to keep up in our family "A Night in the Lonesome October" reading. We do it pretty much every year, but a chapter a night is sometimes a hard pace to keep up with.

Alison has been sick for quite a while, but she is finally feeling better. She has gotten horrible colds every winter ever since high school, but when we started masking during Covid, she stopped getting them! She's been very happy about that, but apparently it stopped working, because she got the exact same symptoms she always does. She was in bed for almost a week, and felt pretty bad for another week, but she's mostly better now. She is blaming the fact that the kids no longer wear their masks. They were quite upset with how sick she was, so maybe they will be more willing to mask again.

The kids had fall break while Alison was sick. It made it easier to get the rest she needed, but it meant that she didn't get the garage school room set up like she had planned to. It's a little annoying, but with everything going on, there's just not time to devote to that. Oh, well. It'll get done eventually.

The kids had fun playing with their friends over fall break, so that was good. Sara got her end-of-term grades: all As! She is very proud and happy.

Sara was also given some new aerial silks material. Last summer, she chose some very stretchy material, but she's found that that limits the tricks she can do. These new ones are not stretchy, and she's really enjoying all the tricks she can do with them.

All the kids went to the dentist last week, and no one had any cavities! We were very happy and plan to have a party to celebrate. We have a lot of achievements to celebrate: Rea had her first purchase from her Etsy shop that wasn't from a relative, Alison wrote 100 drabbles this year, Elsa's been taking her fish oil (and fixing her encopresis).

This weekend, on Friday (which the kids had off school) we went with Grandma and Grandpa and the Rogers to Kinlands Pumpkin Patch. We all got pumpkins and the kids went back to Grandma's house to carve them, while the adults when to Becky's house to play The One Ring, the roleplaying campaign we're in the middle of. We successfully delivered the secret note to the possible-spy, annoyed the captain of the guard by giving him raw catfish meat, and found a promising place to hunt for treasure. It's very fun. Then after dinner we went to Daybreak's pumpkin walk, where we saw some cool Addams family and Headless Horseman cosplayers, lots of amazing jack-o-lanterns, and a man carving an enormous pumpkin while we watched into a sculpture. The kids also trick-or-treated through a bunch of booths from Daybreak businesses. We had a lot of fun.

Saturday morning the girls had rehearsal, then we went to our old nature group with the Dalyais. It was wonderful, and we figured out that we can start meeting on Wednesdays (the kids' early out day) and keep our nature group going. We are all very excited about that! Then we came home and made gluten-free cornbread for the ward chili cookoff. We had a lot of fun judging all the chilis and talking to friends while the kids ran around and played. It was a good evening.

I guess it could also be said that we had some pretty heavy wind storms over here, and some of our siding came off - annoying, but it should be under warrantee still, so we are following up with them
