Faux-Stone Counters

At the game day last week, Caitlin and Sal told us about something that they have been learning: how to use epoxy and mixed media in order to refurbish a counter to look like it is stone. They have been practising their skills on tiles that they bought, and they showed us the samples. They looked really amazing, and we told them so, so they asked if we would let them do our counter as a practice for the house that they are planning on buying and renovating. We agreed to that, because even if the equipment costs a couple hundred, the things looked really good, and it seems worth the effort to have better-looking counters.

On Monday we went to the library and got the usual things (tons of books for the kids). Mike also went to the accountant's office where he gets his taxes done and tried to get his returns from them, however, they were not ready yet (despite them having texted mike and said that they were.)

On Tuesday, the accountant texted again saying that the tax documents were done for real this time, but when Mike went to get them, he noticed that the accountant had missed one of the large sources of income that we have, and so he had to not pick them up again.

Dejected, Mike went to a polish bakery near our house and picked up some paczki to celebrate Fat Tuesday. We ate them at the park and the kids really loved them. In fact - apart from Alison's banana one, they received universal acclaim.

On Wednesday we went to the Zoo with Grandma Julie and Aunt Becky. Timmy liked the monkies. Gideon liked hot cocoa and Grandma Julie. Sara liked the entire thing. Rea liked being with Grandma and the Rogers.

On Friday when Mike got off of work, he bought the equipment for the counter conversion. The kids stayed at the Dalyia's house, so we had a bit of a date night alone. We made dinner together, and it was fun.

Saturday morning Alison dropped Mike off at the accountant again as Alison and the kids went to the library to get movies to watch during Salt Con. The kids got a lot of movies, and Mike got out tax returns! Finally!

Alison already has plans to install radiant heating using the money, so we might have another big project in front of us. We will be hiring a local (Dalyia) teenager to go down in the crawlspace with Mike to keep him company and help out, so it might be a source of really fun stories.

On Saturday we started preparing the kitchen counter - we are going to paint it twice, and then apply the epoxy on Tuesday and Thursday. Our kitchen will be off-limits until Thursday, but we will have Salt Con to let the epoxy dry, and that seems like a good deal since we want as much time as possible to not have to defend it from the kids.

Sunday it started snowing again, so even though we are into March, that doesn't necessarily mean that winter weather is over. We are hoping that even with the snow, we will be able to see Grandma Sheila tomorrow.
