The Wild Potatoes

Over the last two weeks Rea and Sara have been having a lot of rehearsals for their play. They seem to be having fun, and are enjoying the new dance routines a lot.

Mike and the boys went to Brighton Meadows again for a father and son's campout. They had fun and picked more elderberries. Everyone played Mafia in the evening, and overall it was a very fun campout. Mike made more elderberry syrup out of them, so we have quite a bit now.

Alison has been buying scooters on KSL to help her, Rea, and Timmy to get from the tracks station to their co-op on Thursdays. She found three, so they are set for this year.

We celebrated Labor day by inviting Caitlin and the kids over. The adults talked while the kids played. We had "That Soup" (a.k.a. Amy's Taco Soup (we call it "That Soup" since we make it so often, and Mike sometimes mixes it up with a different taco sour recipe that we also sometimes make)) for lunch, and a big pile of tater tots, broccoli, and breaded and fried chicken (and vegetarian chicken alternative) for dinner.

We got invited to the Daybreak campout again by the Poulsons on Friday, so we went down there and joined them. There were hot dogs, marshmallow roasting, a movie, and sleeping in tents in the park, so it was pretty fun. The next morning we went over to their house to have grandpa craigs waffles before going home.

After the campout ended Mike and Tim made salsa using the recipe that Amy posted in her blog years and years ago (she got it from grandpa Mike, so it is a family recipe.) We modified it a bit by replacing a lot of the weaker peppers with hotter ones, so ours had habaneros, thai peppers, three variations on chili peppers, and a few jalapenos and bell peppers. It is pretty tasty and we ended up making 4.5 gallons of it, so hopefully that lasts us till next year.

We ended up with extra peppers, so Mike is considering making them into jelly. We ran out of sugar, so we can't do it today, but tomorrow looks to be empty, so perhaps we will do it then.

Mike has also jailbroken one of our Echo dots and installed a new operating system on it. It talks to a local server that he set up for it, and it is currently able to do most of the things that the normal ones can do, and it also doesn't phone home to Jeff Bezos. If he can get it to do everything that we depend on the old ones doing then he will wipe them all so that we can have a whole house that doesn't phone home to Jeff Bezos

Mike also has been working on a new website called BrownStash - it is a note taking app which is supposed to replace google keep (we are trying to use fewer google products right now (since google is no longer promising to not be evil), so we are having to replace them with other ones.)

Yesterday we went to the castle Nijo-jo . It was very beautiful (albeit in a different way than European castles.) The first thing to strike me was the massive thickness of the surrounding walls. It was truly cyclopean in construction. The castle itself was very comfortable feeling. The rooms were reasonably sized, the castle was warm, the floor was smooth, and the walls were painted with beautiful paintings of animals and scenery. One pattern that we have discovered in Japan is that everything burns down. If you go to a historic site and read the history of it, it will have burned down. Probably it will have burned down multiple times. You would stand the same chance as a blind rat has in a room full of pumas to find a historic site in japan that has not burned down. If you did, it is probably under water. Nijo-jo castle burned down, and then was replaced by another castle from a completely different part of Japan. They moved the whole castle. The Silence Breaks

 We missed three weeks this time, so I am going to try and remember the things that happened throughout pretty much all of October. One thing that we have been doing is struggling to keep up in our family "A Night in the Lonesome October" reading. We do it pretty much every year, but a chapter a night is sometimes a hard pace to keep up with.  Alison has been sick for quite a while, but she is finally feeling better. She has gotten horrible colds every winter ever since high school, but when we started masking during Covid, she stopped getting them! She's been very happy about that, but apparently it stopped working, because she got the exact same symptoms she always does. She was in bed for almost a week, and felt pretty bad for another week, but she's mostly better now. She is blaming the fact that the kids no longer wear their masks. They were quite upset with how sick she was, so maybe they will be more willing to mask again. The kids had fall break while Alison w...

the death of some things, the birth of others

Last week was an interesting one. I learned about a special deal that Artscow was offering that would allow me to print my cards up and see what they would look like (however they would all have identical backs, and that is not something that I really want) I considered that for a few days, but I think that I will hold off for a bit longer. I want to make sure that Ryan doesn't give me a lot of feedback that will change the game right after I get a printing made. I got to see Ryan on Saturday in between sessions of general conference (I loved Uchdorf's talks. They were both great). I dropped off a copy of the game with him (hopefully he gives some good feedback, and comes up with ways to simplify the game.) I played some games of Loot with various family members. It was fairly popular. I like the team aspect of it (4 vs 4 is super fun), but the randomness of the deal is a little annoying (there is the possibility of getting all merchant ships, and you can't ...
