Surgery, and finding the remote

I don't know if I even need to say it, but this last week was a busy one.

We had grandma Julie over for most of the week, which was a huge help to us. She kept things under control while Mike went back to work.

On Monday Grandma, Mike, and the kids went hiking up Bell Canyon to pick Serviceberries. It was a total bust this year. We got 6 berries total, so even though the hike was fun we didn't end up making anything afterward.

During Mike's paternity leave he scheduled Gideon's surgery, so on Tuesday he took the day off to get the surgery done. The surgeon was apparently running super late, because the surgery took all day and though they left at 10:30AM they finally got home at 6:30PM (the surgery itself took about half an hour).

Gideon was very brave, and the surgery went without any real complications, so hopefully his recovery is quick, and he is back to normal pretty soon.

Alison is also still recovering, so Mike is trying to make her take it easy. It is hard to remember that she isn't already all the way back to normal at times given the fact that she looks totally normal.

On Wednesday Grandma kept Gideon in check while Mike went back to work. Gideon is so active, it is hard to make him take it easy. Fortunately the pain medications seem to be doing their job, and Gideon is recovering quickly.

Mike had a lunch interview with Paylocity on Wednesday. This was his second interview with them, and it went well. He has been searching for a way to spend about 4 more hours with the family every day since Alison and the kids want him around more, and finding a fully remote job that he can do in the middle of the night seems like a reasonable path toward that.

Grandma Julie left Thursday. We miss her. The kids have had a bit of a hard time getting back into the swing of things without their grandma, however we are getting along.

On Friday as Mike was working from home he was more attentive than usual to the family, and came out a few times to help out. Next week he plans on taking half days to help out more. Hopefully that works out well, and is not too overwhelming to Alison.

At lunch on Friday Mike had a final interview with Paylocity, and after that he was offered a job with them. The pay and compensation are pretty much the same as his current job, and he will be able to work 100% remotely (which removes about an hour commute from his schedule, and also gives him 1 hour with the family which he used to spend at work for lunch). He will also be able to do some of that work time in the middle of the night, so all in all we are hoping that the job will allow him to spend a lot more time with the family.

What's not to love about that?

Mike will probably start the new job on August 5th, which should give him 2 weeks to pass on his current work responsibilities since next week is the trip to Oregon.

Saturday was a busy day as well - We rebuilt the bench in the front room, did a little shopping, rearranged two closets and some bookshelves, installed another hammock hook in the kids room (the room has almost reached full capacity for kids - it seems hard to imagine a way to sleep more than five in it), took a siesta in the middle of the day, fixed the wheat grinder (so that Mike can make bread again), and stayed up late at the park playing and reading "The Book of Three".

We also fielded many questions today about weather the kids are going to bring their Pokemon cards to Oregon. The answer is "Only Timmy has pokemon cards, but he will definitely bring them". He is super happy to have cousin to play Pokemon cards with.

At the end of the day, we took off Gideon's bangadges, and saw his scars for the first time since the surgery. It is still inflamed, but it doesn't look worse than Timmy's did at that time relative to the surgery. He didn't want to put any bandages back on it, so it was good that Mike had recently had a surgery, so that he could offer the same type of "soft" bandages that he used after his surgery.

Finally, concerning the other kids that we didn't talk about yet:

Sara is super excited about her birthday, which is coming up later this week! She is also feeling a bit sick right now, with a sore throat and nausea.

Rea is being very helpful, and reading a lot. She loves building things with her brothers and spending time by herself. Like her parents she is totally an introvert.

Timmy wants to cuddle baby Elizabeth or play with legos and duplos all day long. He likes helping make food as well.

Elizabeth is still eating well, and sleeping during the night moderately well. She can burp amazingly well also.
