Sara and the Other Drum Players
Since we have tickets to Star Wars in Dec. we are trying to watch the rest of the Star Wars movies before we see the new one. I don't think that we are going to make it. We just finished Episode 2, and we have been trying for over a month so far.
This week, Alison added a new section to Kidschool: Montessori activities. She studied Montessori and we invested time and money into learning about it and making materials back when Rea was a baby, but it never really worked well then. But she's pulled it back out now, with more mother-skills and knowledge about adapting things, and it's going very well. The kids ask to do Montessori most days and spent hours using the materials on several different days this week. It's been very rewarding for Alison to finally have it work.
On Tuesday, Rea achieved her math goal (playing our math block Mastermind with four blocks hidden) and wanted to go straight to the zoo. Unfortunately, Alison got flashes of light obscuring her vision, which is apparently a migraine (she's never had one before), so she let the kids watch a movie and took a nap. So on Wednesday Alison actually took the kids to the zoo, and they had just walked in and were looking at the zebras when Grandma Julie called and said she was home from Aunt Katie's house, so they turned around and went to Kaysville instead. It was fun. The girls have missed Grandma's house.
On Friday Alison and the kids when to the park with the homeschool group. While they were there, they saw some flakes of snow, which made the girls very excited. Despite the cold, they stayed and played outside for two hours, which made Alison happy.
Saturday morning we spent fixing doors. I installed weather stripping on the new door that we put in last weekend and I also fixed the stripped screws of the den room door.
On Saturday afternoon we really went to the zoo with Grandma and Grandpa and Ellie. The kids enjoyed it, and we made it around most of the zoo before leaving. Sara says that her favorite part was seeing the train, but I personally liked seeing active brown bears (which I have never seen before).
I have been working on a new game for NaGaDeMon. So far it is called Archipelago, and is a eurogame about building a chain of islands.
The girls have been having me read them 'On Top of Spaghetti' as a bed time story a lot recently. Probably because of this (though who can really prove causation under such circumstances?) Rea asked me to make spaghetti and meatballs for dinner tonight. Out of laziness we used the recipe on the back of the kids' book. It ended up pretty good anyway.
Sunday afternoon we took a family walk to the park and found ripe hawthorn and firethorn berries. Both are relatives of the apple: edible, but with poisonous seeds. So of course we picked them, took them home, boiled them, sieved out the seeds, and made fire jelly. It's red and tastes something like a cross between grape jelly and apple jelly. It's quite good.
Rea has been enjoying reading and having Alison read to her the Mrs Piggle-Wiggle books. I never read them before, so they are really weird to me.
Sara has formed a band known as 'Sara and the Other Drum Players'. All that she does is play on the electric piano and then declare "Sara and the Other Drum Players are done playing".
Timmy is incredibly strong and likes to wrestle and push people over. He thinks he's very funny.
