An interview with the Brown kids
After having read a post from last year we decided to interview the kids about this week.
M: Tell me about the 12th day of Christmas.
S: We played.
R: And had a crown cake and opened presents.
S: that's all we did, and didn't eat breakfast or lunch or dinner, but be ate dinner but didn't eat breakfast or lunch or dinner but that's what we ate. <singing> "do do do do" and I'm a fairy that waved her dangily wand.
R: The thing that any fairy can do is change her self into a princess
S: Well, I'm a princess fairy - see her wand?
M: How about the Tabletop Simulator
R: All I know is it is tabletop simulator and that daddy can move things around in it.
S: I know chess!
M What about that Princess/Jedi Party?
S: I was a princess and I was a princess and there were so many princesses - even a ton of the little kids that - Rea, tell the rest.
R: It was fun and we played and had a lot of treats. I wished I could stay there.
S: Yes.
M: This week we made a lot of food. Tell us about that.
S: I just remember making pizza. Some time - What is this for?
M: It looks like a bag for a Montessori tool
S: No, it is a Sara tool that we use to make exercise. Rea, pretend it is real.
R: We made lots of food for when mommy is pregnant and the girls wanted to eat it. I helped.
S: I didn't. I was a princess in the princess Jedi party.
M: What about the Team Emma dance party?
R: We got stuff at the dance party and danced an played and it was fun
S: And even the Dalyia's were there, Rea (cause I saw...) Did you see them before? cause I did. Never. Rea, is this true to you?
R: Yes. and you did see them.
S: I only saw them at Emma's party I liked playing princesses
R: Yeah
S: There was a cookie and a cake, and what else? Emma's own cake
R: The muffins that daddy made (and they were so good).
M: What about the times that you guys put on singing performances?
S: Why? I don't know why I was singing!
R: I pretended to be a pop star and sang music.
S: I need to go potty.
M: What about Timmy? What did he do this week?
R: Timmy is talking a very lot and it is fun to listen to him.
S: I'm gonna be a princess today. I'm gonna be really scared that a ghost is in here, but Daddy is right here. I'm a beautiful princess. I don't know where Timmy is, so Ice Cream sandwiches. <Sara holds up the old ice cream sandwich box that the grandparents brought>.
R: Daddy plays a funny game where he says that Timmy's food is his and he pretends that he is mad when he takes it.
S: That's what you say and then we squish the box.
<Rea quits paying attention and is reading Unicorn Dreams>
M: What is happening in your book?
R: She got in the test and she's gonna make a dream wish come true. It's about fairies. I like it and mommy likes it too, and we're reading it.
S: I'm a backpack on daddy.

Our Twelfth Day of Christmas / Three Kings Day turned out well. We opened three gifts each in the morning before work: a gold gift (something precious to you) a frankincense gift (something to help you draw closer to God), and a myrrh gift (something to help you progress or overcome). Rea got a library card, a booklight and large-print scriptures, and a subscription to the educational website Starfall. Sara got a toy phone that makes noise, a CD of the Primary songs for the next year, and princess underwear to encourage her not to have accidents. Timmy got a Montessori activity called the Knobbed Cylinders, a board book of Book of Mormon stories, and puppy underwear to help in potty training this year. It was fun to get another set of presents, but not as exciting as Christmas. I don't know if we'll always do it. But the Twelfth Night cake with a crown inside was great. Rea and Sara made the cake all by themselves (after Mommy wrote out the recipe clearly and got out all the ingredients and utensils) and Alison got the crown, so she had us go outside and play in the snow after dinner. The snow was actually right for snowmen, so we built two life-sized ones and a baby. Then we had a fire and hot chocolate and read a story. It was a wonderful evening.
The Princess/Jedi party was with our friends the Dalyais. We have not seen them in several months, and Sister Dalyai is one of Alison's good friends, so it was really good to visit with them.
The massive cooking project consumed Friday evening and Saturday; it probably added up to 12 hours all together. Alison bought an online bundle a while back that included a free subscription to Once a Month Meals, so we decided to use it before it expired. We picked a menu and it generated a shopping list, a prep list of things to chop Friday night, a list of steps to cook each thing Saturday, recipes, labels for the frozen food, and a list of what we have frozen and how to defrost/cook it. We ended up with what is supposed to be 28 frozen meals (two each of 14 recipes) for 6 people (enough for dinner and the next day's lunch) (although some of them seem like more than 6 servings, so we might even have a few more meals than that). We figure if Mike cooks on weekends and brings home dinner from the work cafeteria once a week, Alison won't have to cook for the entire first trimester of her next pregnancy. Alison had a rough time last pregnancy (OK, all pregnancies, but the more kids she has, the harder it is to keep going), so this was a condition before we could think about getting pregnant again. It was a LOT of work and not something we'd want to do every month, but we are excited about the results. And it was actually fun, aside from being exhausting. Our freezers are full to the brim, but it all fit, and we learned some good new recipes.
The dance party was for the 6 year old in our ward who was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago; she just finished chemo and we celebrated!
