Strawberries and mushrooms
We were so exhausted after Elizabeth's birth, Grandma Sheila decided to drive down Monday and help us out. She got a hotel with a pool and took the big kids to stay there with her for two days. It was heavenly! We managed to get enough naps to feel recovered from the birth, and the kids had a fabulous time. Alison mentioned it to her midwife, and she said that was the best idea she'd ever heard for out of town relatives and she was going to suggest it to other families. We loved it!
Grandma even orchestrated Timmy's birthday party on Tuesday. He wanted Logan and Dustin to play and ice cream cake, so Grandma brought pizza and Dairy Queen ice cream cake and invited Logan and Dustin over to eat with us. Timmy loved it. He also loved his gifts: eggs you chisel open to reveal sea creatures from Grandma Sheila and Grandpa Mike, and two decks of Pokemon cards from Mom and Dad. He got money from Grandma Julie and Grandpa Craig, which he decided to spend on a LEGO set with a dragon. He is very happy about his birthday.
Baby Elizabeth is growing great! At her two day checkup, she had only lost 3% of her birth weight, and she was back up to her birth weight by 4 days. She eats about every two hours around the clock, so she's getting plenty of food.
At the four day checkup, Alison told the midwife that breastfeeding was staying uncomfortable much longer than it took with prior babies to toughen up. The midwife diagnosed a mild lip and tongue tie and snipped them. We've had babies with ties before, but they managed to latch properly; Elizabeth couldn't. Alison started feeling better immediately, although Elizabeth still has bad habits and sometimes it takes a few tries before she latches correctly.
Alison has spent the week cuddling the baby and resting, like she's supposed to. She feels very recovered from the birth, but it's nice to rest and nap (with the nursing every two hours thing) and read as much as she wants.
After Grandma left Wednesday morning, Mike and the kids had time to work some more on painting the tree house and doing some yard work.
Wednesday night we ate a strawberry pie that we had made on Monday (we picked wild strawberries with Grandma Sheila on Monday). We picked more on Saturday, and there are probably one more week of berries left in the patch.
Mike and the kids went to our regular park day Friday morning, when the kids got to see their friends and Mike got pulled into talking to all of Alison's mom friends about Elizabeth's birth and how we were doing.
While at the park, Mike found a huge cluster of edible mushrooms growing under a group of pine trees. He picked them, and identified them. He has sauteed them up, and plans on making mushroom ravioli some time this upcoming week.
Saturday Timmy had some faint red spots all over. He seems fine otherwise, so it's either an allergic reaction or a mild virus. We kept him home from Church with Alison and the baby, just in case, and we're trying to keep him from touching the baby too. That's not easy; he loves his baby. All the kids really do, and they're excited for when she's a little bigger and stronger and they're allowed to hold and interact with her more.
