No more chickens

This week Mike called and asked a local repair shop how much it would cost to fix his phone. The price that they quoted was more than the price to buy a new phone, so he just ordered the parts, and planned on fixing it himself. All the parts have arrived, but no matter how many screwdrivers he bought he couldn't find one the right size to open the phone up. So, now he has the parts, but can't actually fix the phone yet. He has another screwdriver on the way that will hopefully work this time.

We sold our chickens on Monday to an old guy. We decided that finding chicken sitters for the trip to Italy would be too hard, and since we already are leaving the goats at the stud, we will be able to get by without any pet sitters as long as we release (or eat) the grasshoppers before we go.

Speaking of the grasshoppers: we have about four right now in the aquarium. The kids haven't decided to eat them yet, so we are just taking care of them and feeding and watering them regularly. Every so often one escapes, and then we have to catch it, but other than that they are pretty low effort pets.

Tuesday we played another session of the My Little Pony RPG. The ponies chased Trixie (the bad pony) down a ravine, snuck past her guard statues, and then beat her up and saved the ponies that had been captured. They then were nice to a giant scorpion and saved her eggs from some hillbilly pony that wanted to make an omelette.

On Wednesday Alison went to her writing group meeting, and worked on her novel. The group meetings always get her excited to start writing again when she's stopped for a while. Alison is still using all her extra time to get all of our school stuff in order for this school year (she has a lot of curriculum supplies she bought digitally and has to print and bind, as well as trying to plan out how to use our science curriculum [which is awesome but hard to implement]), so she hasn't been writing much lately. She's also been teaching more for the last couple of weeks with VIPKID, so she hasn't had as much free time. But she likes having all these interesting things to do.

We attended the kids martial arts class for the first time on Thursday. Timmy and Sara had a great time, and Rea had an okay time. Timmy reports that he fought and learned kicks and punches and got boxing gloves and an outfit. Rea and Sara both learned kicks and punches as well, and also got gloves and outfits. After we made it home, they all wanted to have a sparring match, and so we let them practice their skills.

Sara was quite powerful: she punched Timmy over, and then punched Rea into a chair. It was very impressive, but we then had a discussion about how when we are practicing we can moderate our strength to make sure that we don't really hurt people. Timmy and Rea still like sparring, but Sara was by far the strongest.

As we were planning for our trip to Italy, Mike realized that Spiel (one of the biggest board game conventions in the world) is at the same time as we are going to be in Venice. He is now planning on spending a day in Germany to see the convention.

Mike also got some "Box art" for his game. The Kickstarter has been pushed back till October because of delays in getting art work for it. That being said, he is really excited to have it coming together.

Since the game is about time travel, and repeatedly reliving the same events over and over again it features multiple stories that the players got wrong in the past and have to try and correct. In the published version of the game, one is a love story, one is a bank robbery, and one is a boxing match that the player tried to attend.

There is also an expansion in the works, which is set in a casino, where the player apparently had a "job" to do, but messed it up. Perhaps he was a cop, or a secret agent investigating something.

Friday Alison went to a meeting about the kids' co-op that we're doing this year. It's a outdoor nature program, and we'll be meeting at our favorite park every Friday from 10:30 to 2:30 for a more formal program, as well as meeting Tuesday afternoons casually. We have already been doing school for two weeks, and our Tuesday group never stopped, but we're getting excited to start the Friday program.

Friday night we had another game night with the Guertlers. We played a few games, and they had some of their adult kids there, so Mike was wishing that we had brought different games. We still played some fun games, and had a good time.

All the boys started coughing on Saturday morning, so somehow we got a sickness in the family. None of the girls have shown symptoms yet, so perhaps it is a gender specific thing. Either way, the boys only attended sacrament meeting on Sunday so that they could not get all of their classmates sick. The girls got their parts for our Primary Program and started writing them. (In our ward, the kids get given a fill-in-the-blank sentence [little kids] or a topic to write a mini talk on [big kids], and they write their own parts. This was Alison's idea, and she really likes it.) The program will be September 23rd, in case anyone wants to come to town for it :-P.
