On Laundry and Retirement

On Monday of last week Mike stayed home from work to help all of the sick people. By the time that Monday was over we decided that Mike was going back to work on Tuesday. Sara and Mike were the only family members that avoided the sickness all together.

On Wednesday we opened up the Valentines day package from Grandpa Mike and Grandma Sheila, and the kids all ate the candy. Rea wants it noted that Gideon stole her candy, so she didn't get to eat it and that she didn't get to pick a date night activity either. We also saved the sour patch kids for a movie on friday, so we didn't eat those.

For date night Alison and Mike put on a movie for the kids and then read together. It is a funny thing, but reading together is one of our favorite dates.

Saturday morning we stayed in bed extra long talking about our budget, and our plans for retirement. The kids found it very boring, but we had a fun time. We even talked about going into semi-retirement by our 10th wedding anniversary. Mike enjoys working, but also wants to spend more time with the family, so if he were to change over to working part time, he would be able to do both of those things.

We have been living on about 30k every year, and if he were to switch over to part time making a little bit more than that, we could fairly easily keep up our current lifestyle, and spend a lot more time together.

We would need to pay for insurance if he didn't have benefits, but that is only about 12k a year, so 60k could still easily cover all our needs. Given that we are making about 18k teaching currently (and Alison could still scale that up quite a bit if she wanted to) Mike would just have to make 42k on his part time job. That seems totally doable.

It is a fun thing to talk about anyway.

On Saturday Mike fired up the laser printer, and started to cut some fraction circles for Alison. It took a long time to get the old laser installed again, and remember how to generate the laser cutting files, but after that it was pretty easy. Hopefully the cutting goes well.

Mike is also considering making a laser cut dice tower - once the fraction circles are good, he will start on that.

We also cleaned up and did a ton of laundry (we need to figure out how to get the kids to not throw all of their laundry in the dirty clothes every day). We also got some more goat fodder.

On Sunday, Mike made 36 muffins, and 24 of them have already been eaten. These kids love their muffins.
